The Book of Big Feelings

The Book of Big Feelings is a daily resource for children aged 4 to 8 that supports social and emotional learning. Developed with experts and aligned to PSHE Association guidelines, the book introduces a range of vocabulary to help children identify and express their emotions through humorous illustrations and reflection questions.

Year: 2023

  • The goal was to design a functional product that makes emotional learning a daily staple in homes and classrooms. The brief required a layout easily navigated by children and adults alike, balancing high-energy character art with structured content.

  • I led the design direction for this project, working alongside a junior designer to translate complex emotional concepts into a child friendly format. I built the master templates and core styling to ensure the product felt like a supportive companion rather than a textbook. To ensure immediate usability, I repurposed the successful and award winning dual-sided structure from the Storytellers Word A Day series. This allowed the “word of the day” to spark curiosity on the front while providing adults with the necessary tools and activities on the reverse. By establishing this clear design system, I ensured that new vocabulary remained approachable and visually integrated into the daily routine.

  • The project delivered a trusted educational tool that successfully sparks meaningful conversations about feelings. By creating an intuitive, display friendly format, I helped turn abstract emotional concepts into a manageable and aesthetic daily routine that is valued by both educators and families.
