Storyteller’s Illustrated Dictionary

A hilariously illustrated dictionary designed to help children aged 7 to 12 master 1,000 sophisticated words. Developed in collaboration with literacy experts, the book uses illustrated humour to make advanced vocabulary memorable and accessible.

  • The objective was to reinvent the traditional dictionary as an engaging, narrative-driven tool for the modern classroom. The project required a layout that could house thousands of data points, including synonyms and word pairs, while keeping the focus on expressive, humorous character illustrations. The design needed to be robust enough to act as a primary reference book for home and school use across global markets.

  • I contributed to the design and layout of this core title, ensuring that the complex density of information remained accessible for young readers. I managed the visual hierarchy of word definitions and linguistic data, working to integrate high resolution character art in a way that felt cohesive and lively. I played a key role in the production of the global editions, maintaining strict brand standards for the UK, US, Canada, EU, and Australian markets.

  • A pilot study with the National Literacy Trust showed that students using the dictionary saw a 50% improvement in literacy outcomes. The product became one of the most decorated in the brand portfolio, winning the Parent’s Choice Gold, Mom’s Choice, and Tillywig Brain Child Awards. Following the acquisition by DK, I served as lead designer to oversee the transition of the title into their global catalogue. With over 15,000 copies sold, it solidified the brand’s position in the international market.
