Big A Little a Alphabet Cards

Big A Little a is a set of four illustrated card decks designed for children aged 3 and up to practise recognising letters. The primary goal is to help early learners memorise letterforms and simultaneously connect capital letters with their small letter counterparts through visual matching activities.

Inside the box you will find decks featuring the full alphabet in both upper and lowercase as well as accompanying cards containing illustrated concrete nouns to represent a letter in a corresponding word.

  • The objective was to design a physical product for the preschool age group that introduced the alphabet in a fun and phonetic way. It was also imperative to utilise Mrs Wordsmith’s IP and commission a new library of character illustrations specifically for this product.

  • I designed a system of four distinct decks with a structural architecture that allowed for multiple matching combinations. I established a colour coding system to distinguish between the uppercase, lowercase, and illustrated sets to aid navigation for young learners and their parents.

I collaborated with the curriculum and art teams to select phonetic anchor words to create bespoke illustrations for each letter sound. I also led the physical product development, ensuring the card size, rounded corners, and material thickness were optimised for the ergonomic needs and durability required by a preschool audience.

  • The project successfully established the brand within the preschool alphabet category and received high acclaim for its fun and educational design. It became a foundational product in the Mrs Wordsmith early years physical product range.
