The brief was to create a phonics activity book that aligned to the DK Learning educational standards whilst retaining Mrs Wordsmith’s humorous brand personality. The primary goal was to deliver repetitive phonics practice in a fun and engaging way for children aged four to five, ensuring the transition from adult support to independent confidence was rewarding and accessible.

I designed master templates and briefed my design team to concept individual spreads within this framework. This system allowed for a variety of visual skins, ensuring that the learning content varied visually and remained fresh and exciting throughout the entire publication. By overseeing the integration of interactive elements such as reusable stickers, I ensured that children could explore the activities and make mistakes without fear. Through this approach and the careful localisation for both UK and US markets, I created a scalable design system that met the precise requirements of the DK Learning partnership.

Get Reading with Phonics remains a core part of the Mrs Wordsmith range with successful global distribution. The project proved the efficiency of my templated design system, allowing the team to produce vast volumes of premium content without extensive art labour. By combining this scalable framework with a bold visual language, we successfully delivered an impactful resource that remains engaging for a global audience.
